QVC is Wastin' Away Again in Margaritaville

Happy Cinco de Mayo! QVC is celebrating the big day with the Margaritaville margarita maker as the TSV. Unfortunately for them, South Park skewered the Margaritaville and the people who buy the lushy contraption on an episode just a few weeks ago, and now that's all that pops in my head when I see a presentation. Well, that and where I can find that damn lost shaker of salt ... Maybe that'll be a TSV Extra today? Lunchtime Special, perhaps?

A Royal Mess!

This is my Michael Jackson Beat It purse:



I normally carry a suitcase-sized handbag, but I found this one on clearance at Target for about $7 and thought I would use it for a while as a much needed "pop of red." It was the cute polka dot lining that sold me (QB *hearts* cute lining). Check it out:





Notice the big mess in there? Yeah, I know. I might be a self-proclaimed Queen, but I'm also a royal mess! Let's dump out all the contents, shall, we?




EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!! I need help! It just so happens that an anonymous carrier pigeon dropped off the new TSV Lori Greiner Purse Organizer at my door. How convenient!

Will it work?

I couldn't use the the outermost part because it was waaay to large for my purse. But I think it'll work well in my bathroom for random toiletries. Anyway, I managed to get my brush, mints, pens, glasses, keys, phone, nail file, and money into the remaining pieces. I also kept my big wallet (which also has cute lining, thank you very much) with the pepper spray attached for all the usual wallet stuff.





The whole thing fit into my purse nicely and I just had to set the wallet on top. BTW, the random papers you see in the big pile of royal purse crap are now folded nicely and tucked into the zipper compartment of my purse. I did throw some of them away. Somehow i had managed to collect about five different grocery lists and receipts from every gas station visit and coffee I've purchased in the last year!








So will my new found organization last? I don't know. I like to be organized, but I have a hard time staying that way.

Timeless vs. Trendy

How will this recent downturn in the economy affect luxury purchases? Considering that almost everything that QVC sells is a want and not a need, this is an important question.

I can't help but think about how my grandmothers, who are both children of the Great Depression, approach luxury purchases. They certainly aren't opposed to buying a little something sparkly or special for themselves or for a gift. But if they decide to splurge and buy a luxury item, the purchase will be well-considered. They are willing to spend more money for better quality, good customer service, and names they trust. They also expect the purchase to last a lifetime, which means that good craftsmanship and classic design are both a must.

Counter this thinking with mine. I never expect customer service. I just assume that I'm on my own, because employees are usually underpaid, understaffed, and under-trained. In fact, they usually just don't care and will do and say anything to get you to go away as quickly as possible. If you're dealing with customer service over the phone, they may even be located in India and barely speak English. Let me tell you, that always works out well! I also don't expect anything I buy to last. I assume whatever I buy will fall apart sooner rather than later. Since everything is made in China anyway, why spend the extra money on something high-end? It'll just fall apart too, right?

Will there be a return to my grandmothers' way of thinking? Will we give up our love 'em and leave 'em disposable attitude?

Let's ask QVC's reigning jewelry queen, Judith Ripka. According to an article in Portfolio:

Judith Ripka believes the current mind-set will have a longer, residual effect than the actual recession. "The day will come when consumers will not worry as much about how they spend their every dollar, but they will always remember these economic challenges when contemplating a purchase," said Ripka. "Luxury will continue to be desirable, but timeless and classic pieces will undoubtedly be the focus because of their lasting value."

Will Judith and other home shopping designers switch gears and focus more on timeless styles? It's just hard for me to imagine home shopping channels not jumping onto every trend bandwagon that comes passing by hoping to cash in as quickly as possible.

QVC Looks to Buy HSN

QVC's parent company, Liberty Media, wants to make a play for HSN.

In case you didn't already know, here's the quick lowdown on the home shopping family tree: HSN was owned by IAC (i.e. Barry Diller); however, Liberty Media (i.e. John Malone), which owns QVC, had a 30% stake in IAC. So HSN and the Q were kinda sorta related--cousins from an inbred family, perhaps?

Anyway, then IAC spun off HSN into its own company cause Barry Diller's got better things to do now--like buying matchmaking websites in China!

On a recent conference call, Liberty CEO Gregg Maffei said that they are prohibited from making a bid on HSN until May 2010. "But we do believe we are the natural owner at some point of that company. We're the one with the most synergies." Maffei added that in the meantime, QVC has the right to increase its stake in HSN from 30% to 35%.

I don't know why Liberty wants even more of the home shopping biz--even though they are the "natural owner" with the most "synergies." Especially considering QVC's recent lackluster sales--domestic revenue fell 12% last quarter (that's the uber important holiday season too) mostly due to declines in jewelry and apparel. However, QVC President and CEO Mike (King) George swears on his brand new Mini Dell that the fall-off is not because that aren't attracting new customers or that their existing customers are leaving, but due to customers just buying less frequently.

And FYI, Liberty also just bailed out Sirius XM, so I'd be expecting a Sirius XM Radio TSV on the Q soon--only 6 easy payments, y'all!

Keurig is King!

Queen Bea was sooo naughty yesterday! I have been lusting after a Keurig ever since my Bunn coffee maker decided to leak more than it dripped. Now mind you, I've been watching all the Keurig shows on the Q religiously and nearly had a caffeine-induced nervous breakdown when it was the TSV a few months back, but I stayed strong and resisted.

Yesterday was the last stir straw. I had no more will power left.

But I didn't get it from QVC. Nope. I didn't want that silly little mini, personal, wanna be Keurig they had as yesterday's TSV. No, ma'am! I wanted the big daddy. I took a little trip to Sam's Club and came home with my brand new baby. Check it out:



I love my Keurig! I've had it less then 24 hours and I'm already a spoiled rotten little gourmet coffee brat. I want my cup organic, free trade, dark roasted coffee and I want it now! No one should have to wait for an entire pot to brew. How pedestrian.

In all seriousness, I am the only coffee drinker in my household, so something like the Keurig--while certainly still a luxury--is much appreciated. Not to mention the way those soft blue lights illuminate the water tank is nothing less than magical. *sigh*

Beans and Cornbread

I went to my in-laws this weekend. They live in the country--God's country, y'all--picture horse trailers hitched to muddy pickups, hay bales, and tobacco hanging up in the barn to dry.

In any case, I think I might have gained roughly five pounds in two days. We drove over to the next little town and ate at Cathy's Country Cupboard and let me tell you, it was some good, down home, stick-to-your-ribs kinda cookin'! We had a mess o' fried catfish, white beans, coleslaw, fried potatoes, cornbread, and sweet tea. I have to say that the white beans surprised me. I'm used to pintos (you know, cook 'em up low and slow with some ham hocks or fatback), but these white beans were even better. And then the desserts ... Lord have mercy! This old country gal named Frieda comes in early in the morning and makes all the pies and cobblers from scratch. Coconut pie, pecan pie, peach cobbler, lemon meringue pie, and blackberry cobbler were the selections when I went. Frieda makes what she wants to make. The blackberry cobbler had big, fat, fresh blackberries all through it and the crust was perfection. Frieda is an artist.

That was just one meal. I'm not going to get into the biscuits and sausage gravy, grits, and hashbrowns that happened at breakfast. I'm going to have to eat nothing but salad for days just to get the gravy out of my bloodstream. It was totally worth it though.

A few random Monday morning home shopping thoughts:

I had tons of emails about Lisa Robertson--where did she go? Was she fired? Which I found really funny. We have become so accustomed to the powers that be just canning people with no warning that if someone misses a shift or two, we're pretty sure that the worst happened--post traumatic host firing disorder, maybe? So, calm down. No, she's not fired and she didn't quit. She's back. Word is that her father had a stroke and she--quite understandably--needed to go be with him. I certainly hope that all is well now.

And the other Lisa--Lisa Mason--her hair is to die for! Props to Gino that big Hawaiian hair dresser husband of hers. Love him!

Sterling Silver Designer Day was a total bust for me. I haven't checked out the message boards yet to see how other people felt about it, but I wasn't impressed. The Ripka TSV was covered in hearts and I don't do hearts--Queen Bea is a heartless shell of a woman, you know. There was also waaay too much old stuff, too much expensive stuff, and not enough special deals. I know that the Q is allergic to having "sales," but we are in a recession. Tough times call for some sales on silver.

Speaking of sales, my diva hoops arrived! I totally rocked them down at Cathy's Country Cupboard.

On a side note, I've had some email conversations with several of you about writing. Yes, I enjoy writing. That's why I started this blog to begin with. I wanted somewhere to write that would be fun and freeing. Writing books is a long process that involves more planning, editing, and rewriting than actual writing (writing is rewriting, right?) I wanted instant gratification and I didn't want to fuss over perfect grammar--I wanted to let my participles dangle freely! This blog is a perfect outlet for that.

Anyway, I've once again been bitten by the nasty book bug. A little seed was planted in my head while I was watching a news story one day. That's what happens when your at home laying on the couch with the flu. Your brain is all mushy and fertile--ripe for planting. That little seed has since grown into some characters who I adore and a funny little plot for them to play in.

I know that a few of you are also writers and I know at least one of you is writing a book and another is thinking about it. I'm looking for some buddies to go through the writing muck with me and sit in the dark, lonely trenches. If for no other reason than to provide little word count encouragement. Trust me, it helps! If you've ever done NaNoWriMo, you know that a little peer pressure and competition will spur you to higher word counts. If you don't already know, writers are expert naval-gazers and need a little motivation to actually do something remotely productive. Any takers???

I am sooo tempted ...

Mr. Queen Bea has been wanting a new HDTV for some time now. And from everything I can tell, QVC's TSV is a great deal--a brand name TV for the price of a no-name TV at Wal-Mart.

Two things are holding me back: 1) they don't tell you the exact model number, which makes accurate comparison shopping difficult, 2)the shipping and handling is ridiculous!

Will I kick myself tomorrow if I don't get this???

These Studs are Breakin' Records and Takin' Names

Remember when QVC had that Honora pearl earring stud set as the TSV recently?

Turns out that they sold 287,500 sets, breaking the all-time TSV sales record (I believe the old record was a Dell product).

I remember that they were selling like crazy all day (literally, they were flying out the door!) and I just kept waiting for them to run out, but they never did. I can't even imagine how many of these they ordered.

QVC lived up to its name with this one: it was a name-brand fashionable product, a good price, free shipping, buy more-save more, and a versatile enough of gift to work for everyone from a little girl to a big granny. Quality. Value. Convenience. What a concept!

I thought about ordering these, but I haven't had much luck with Honora. I've had to send back everything I've ever ordered due to quality issues. I understand that these pearls aren't going to be perfect, but huge pits and cracks just aren't gonna work for me. However, this particular set has gotten rave reviews. I think it's because these are only 7mm-pearls, whereas I'm always trying to get a string of boulders around my neck! The bigger they are, the harder it is to get them in a decent quality.

QVC Powers-That-Be, please try to do more TSV's like this one. Learn, grasshopper, learn!

Two Things ...

First, according to godFreako on the QVC message boards, the big, pave hoops from the Diamonique commercial that I've been drooling over will be sold for ... drum roll, please ... $248.12!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Has QVC lost their minds? Two hundred and fifty dollars for CZ and silver ... for real? Is this supposed to be a joke? That must be a helluva a lot of platinum that they're plating on those earrings.

Y'all know how much I love my fake diamonds and I've been hunting for a big pair of pave hoops for a while now, so I was primed and ready with my wallet open and credit card in hand to buy those earrings tonight, but there is no number of Easy Pays that can make up for a ridiculous price tag like that. And for once I don't even care about free shipping. That price is just insulting.

Maybe they will realize the enormous error of their ways before tonight ... the Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise!

Second, the TSV--Keurig Ultimate Coffee Brewer w/ 54 K-Cups & My K-Cup Filter--is a rocking deal. Mr. Queen Bea wanted to get me a new coffee maker for Christmas and I do believe I have helped him find it!

My Bunn, which was supposed to last forever, now leaks more coffee than it makes. Although I'm sad and disappointed in my Bunn, I'm pretty sure that I can drink my sorrows away with this little baby.

The reviews are almost uniformly glowing (the naysayers seem to expect their own personal tree-hugging Starbucks barista to pop out of the machine to make their morning brew) and I can't find a better price. Plus you get 54 K-Cups, a coupon for more coffee of your choice, half-price shipping, and the K-Cup filter so you can use whatever coffee you want with it. And did I mention the 5 Easy Pays?

At least someone at the Q still has a clue. Oh! And I forgot to mention one of the best benefits of this coffee maker--watching the already hyper hosts get juiced up on caffeine all day!

So, when all is said and done, at least I will have a tasty cup of coffee to sip while I fume over my hoops (and they are mine even if they aren't technically in my possession).

For the Forbidden Love of Fake Diamonds

Oh, how I loves me some fake diamonds! QVC is kicking off Diamonique Week with a big ol' blingy bang. Wow! If this bracelet wasn't $300--yes, you read that right,Three.Hundred.Dollars.--I would be all over it.

*Sigh* I think I'll just be crying on me keyboard all day.

Creede Rocks the Bracelets!

It's Creede Silver Strike Day on the Q!!! I love jewelry and I love silver, so I certainly have no problem with an entire day dedicated to silver jewelry!

After looking through all the Creede pieces, I was most struck with the bracelets (and I'm not just talking about the TSV either). Normally I'm much more of a ring and earring kind of a girl, but the bracelets were clearly the stars of the day.

The TSV is an Arte d'Argento Sterling Multi-gemstone Charm Bracelet. I love just about anything Arte d'Argento, but I'm sure we'll soon be hearing stories of beads falling off the bracelet (or arriving already broken). I always worry when a manufacturer has to make enough of something for it to be a TSV. If you have to make 10-20,000 bracelets (I have no idea how many they have), I'm guessing that the quality is naturally going to slip a little. Although I have to admit, it does look like it would be fun to wear and jingle.

Scrapping Round Up

The scrappers are all abuzz on the web today! It's a scrappers paradise on the Q.

I went through a scrapping phase and I loooooove to scrapbook. Love it! The problem was that it took over my life. It became this all-consuming obsession for me. I had to stop cold turkey. I still have my supplies tucked safely away and I hope to one day scrap again (oh yes, I will scrap again!), but for now, I have to keep a safe distance.

The TSV That Wasn't: The Case of the Disappearing Ring

I was watching the Q last night at midnight and saw what looked to be a crazy "Simona Collini Scroll Design Oval Domed Stainless Steel Ring" auction led by frantic auctioneer, Jane "The Ballerina" Treacy.


I don't know if the original TSV fell through and this was a last-minute replacement or they weren't able to get enough of these steel rings in on time, but they sure as heck didn't last.


Is there something I don't know about this ring? Does it have magic powers? Will it wash my dishes? What happened???

Today's Blue Plate Specials ... Anorexic Gold

Did you watch the Gold Rush yesterday? I caught a few minutes here and there--enough to remind myself why the gold shows are not my favorite. Gold ain't cheap. There's just no way around that fact. You can only make the gold so thin and hollow to try to keep the cost down. I'm fairly certain that there are laws of physics involved in this (much to the Q's dismay).

With few exceptions, the pieces were either too expensive or too thin--anorexic gold is not only not attractive, it doesn't last. Looks like unless or until gold prices go down, I'm not going to be buying much.

Was it just me or did Mary Beth's dress look very uncomfortable last night??? And what's with all the new gold colors? Purple? For real? I have nothing against purple, but I for one would not fork over all that money for real gold that looks fake. I'll just bypass that middle man and buy fake!


The QVC TSV is a KathyVan Zeeland Patent Croco Emb. Convertible Organizer Bag. Normally I love Kathy Van Zeeland purses. They're funky, fun , and fresh. But this one just seems like the same old same old. Not particularly impressed with this one. I still love Kathy though!

They look ok on the models, but I can never pull it off ... sock? no sock? trouser sock? I don't know. It just never looks right on me. I'm either doing something wrong or I'm just too damn short to pull it off. Ugh!

In light of the fact that I am not Oprah, I make due with the lab-created variety. "Real" rubies--like the kind in this ring--do nothing for me.



The QVC TSV is an Oreck Restaurant Vacuum with Floor Sweeper,Crystal Aroma & Deodorize. I haven't ever used an Oreck, but I've heard that they're great. However, can they still compete against the Dyson? I don't know. It did get the Arthritis Foundation Ease-of-Use Commendation.

I was watching the Olympics swimmers in their little Spanx-looking swimsuits again last night and saw an interesting segment about Michael Phelps. He said that he has to eat between 8 to 10 thousand calories a day. 10,000 calories!!! Basically, when he's not swimming or sleeping, he's eating. I would look like Jabba the Hut!

I haven't seen anything to substantiate either of these yet, but my fingers are crossed! Many people seem to think that it would be a bad thing. Come on! Think about the entertainment value, people.

HSN TS is a Slinky Brand 3 piece Jacket and Pant Set. I am not feeling this one--probably because it's hand wash and lay flat to dry. Although, I will say that I'm glad they offer the different blazer styles (three-quarter sleeve, button, or zip) and different lengths (petite, regular, and tall). I'm sorry, but you just can't hem something like this! Or at least I can't.


The QVC TSV is the Borba Age Defying Complete 4-piece Recovery Kit. Although I haven't tried this kit, I do have a little Borba in my collection. I don't know how well it works since I can never use one product exclusively or long enough to actually find out. I can say that it smells great! And if you want that new age defying advanced recovery creme, you'll have to get it from QVC since it won't be in other stores until February.


The Judith Ripka TSV on Thursday will be a Sterling 18", 22" or 54" Cultured Freshwater Pearl Chain You can go ahead and order it now ... not that I love Ripka or anything. The ShopNBC OTV is a 14K White or Yellow Gold Five Stone 1.00ct Princess Cut Diamond Ring. The description states that the color is H-I and the clarity is I2-I3, but it seems to look better than that. Maybe the on-air samples are a little better. I do like this ring since I have a thing for band-style rings.
