QVC and the Art of Instant Gratification

I don't think that a girl should have to wait for fake diamonds. That kinda defeats the purpose of buying the fake stuff. Diamonique is not something that you have to scrimp and save for and worry that it will go out of style in ten years after you spent a fortune to buy it. It's just a little something special you get for yourself because it's pretty and fun--instant sparkle gratification.

After a long fake diamond dry spell, I find myself rather enamoured with the new Judith Ripka Emerald Cut Wedding Band. I've had my eye on this ring for at least the last week--ever since those super sleuths on the Ripka message board found it (Shout out to the Ripka board! I know you already have a Queen, but perhaps I can be a visiting dignitary or something?)

But if I order it now, it won't even ship until June 18th.

Huh??? That's more then two months away!

Why didn't they just wait to sell it on June 18th? Maybe as a TSV? I'm completely baffled.

Of course, if you don't order today, you miss out on the special anniversary price. How annoying. Considering we have to wait for two months to get the ring, the Q could have at least offered free shipping or a special coupon for our inconvenience.

Patience is not and never has been a home shopping virtue. How can I fall prey to their slippery sales tactics and impulsively buy a ring that I don't really need if they aren't even going to send it to me?

As Margaret Thatcher said, "I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end."

If Lovin' You is Wrong Then I Don't Wanna be Right

So, here's the thing, I'm having a bit of a moral dilemma. During Diamonique Week, I ordered this ring. At the time, it was on sale for $22, which ain't too shabby for a $48 ring. And, as you all know, I have a forbidden love of fake diamonds--a love of which I can not speak in public--and I had been wanting a yellow stone for quite some time.

I'm no Jennifer Flavin Stallone, I will never be able to afford an actual canary diamond (of any size and quality that I would be willing to wear anyway). Besides, even if I could afford such outrageous bling, I would have more important things to spend my money on.

After reading the glorious reviews online, I decided to give this particular ring a whirl since the price was right.

And let me tell you, there is nothing quite like waiting for the UPS man carrying a little brown bag filled with something sparkly to get me through the long work day. Just a small something to keep me going.

Here's the thing, the yellow center stone is to die for. Gorgeous! It doesn't have that "fake look" at all. I even tried it in various types of lighting and it never failed to shine. However, the two side stones are terrible. Not only are they cloudy, they have a dead spot, which I believe is due to the way they were set. I might have been able to look past that considering the price, but then the prongs started attacking me and snagging my clothes. Those things are deadly!

Between the dead side stones and the deadly prongs, I have no intention of keeping the damn thing.

But here's where the moral dilemma comes in, do I keep it for a few months just for the fun of the beautiful center stone before sending it back or do I just ship it off now? The return policy does give me until the end of January. Technically I'm not doing anything wrong. In fact the hosts even encourage this behavior all the time!

Why-oh-why does it feel so wrong then?

Do other customers buy products during this extended return period knowing full well that they have no intention of keeping them? ... A home shopping loaner program of sorts.

In defence of keeping the ring longer, I still have to pay shipping. I deserve a little something for my trouble. Don't I???

BTW, the responses to the On-Air Testimonial question have been great! Please keep them coming. I will be posting your reactions soon.

The TSV That Wasn't: The Case of the Disappearing Ring

I was watching the Q last night at midnight and saw what looked to be a crazy "Simona Collini Scroll Design Oval Domed Stainless Steel Ring" auction led by frantic auctioneer, Jane "The Ballerina" Treacy.

I don't know if the original TSV fell through and this was a last-minute replacement or they weren't able to get enough of these steel rings in on time, but they sure as heck didn't last.

Is there something I don't know about this ring? Does it have magic powers? Will it wash my dishes? What happened???

Today's Blue Plate Specials ... Suck

The HSN TS is a 2.98ct Ruby Sterling Silver "Vintage" Ring. You see, I love rubies. But I love really good rubies. The kind that are more expensive per carat than good diamonds. In light of the fact that I am not Oprah, I make due with the lab-created variety. "Real" rubies--like the kind in this ring--do nothing for me.

The QVC TSV is an Oreck Restaurant Vacuum with Floor Sweeper,Crystal Aroma & Deodorize. I haven't ever used an Oreck, but I've heard that they're great. However, can they still compete against the Dyson? I don't know. It did get the Arthritis Foundation Ease-of-Use Commendation.

Yet another in a long, long line of watch OTV's from ShopNBC. I love the watch itself, but hate the bands that come with it. They cheapen the look of the watch.

There is an online only Offerings Trunk Show. Check it out here. One of these days I'm going to actually order something from Offerings instead of just window shopping.

Don't forget to vote if this week's HOME SHOPPING CAGE MATCH!

Adrienne Arpel vs. Joan Rivers

Fashion jewelry, watches, makeup, skincare, purses, and plastic surgery ... they both do it all ... but who does it better???

Today's Blue Plate Special ... Exotic Travels on Wheels

The QVC TSV is a 1.10 ct tw Andalusite & Diamond Accent Ring 14K Gold. I don't care for the setting, but the stone is interesting. I didn't know much about andalusite so I did a little research. Here's what Jewelry Television had to say about the gem:
Depending on the viewing direction, andalusite can appear olive green, rich reddish brown, or grayish green.
Unlike alexandrite, andalusite color changes are pleochroic and based on viewing angle - not lighting.
Andalusites are often cut so that the table is green with red or orange on the edges.
Named after the Spanish city Andalusia, andalusite was first discovered in Spain. Andalusite is a naturally occurring pleochroic gemstone.
On Mohs’ scale of hardness, andalusite is 7.5.

Even Jewelry Television didn't have much inventory of this stone, so it really is rare. The Q's not lying!

The HSN TS is a Skyway 30" Wheeled Duffle with Vented Pocket. I'm sure this is fine. I just don't have an opinion one way or the other. If you like SSC, there is a 20% off sale here.

The ShopNBC OTV Taja 7' x 9' Hand Tufted Wool Rug. I have a rug that looks just like this! $200 isn't a bad price for a 7x9 wool rug, even with the $25 shipping (plus most people don't have to pay sales at ShopNBC!!!)

If you've got 08/08/08 Olympic fever, ShopNBC also has all the new Olympic gear here.

Today's Blue Plate Specials ... IT'S SILVER DESIGNER DAY!!!

The QVC TSV is an Ann King Sterling/18K 8.00 ct Gemstone Ring in either Green Quartz, White Topaz, Black Onyx. I *heart* Ann King. And I looooooove Sterling Designer Gallery Day. Queen Bea will be buzzing today, chickadees!

Did you catch either Anthony or Nak's cell phone going off during their show last night with Lisa? Did you see Lisa's dress? Oh my goodness, she sure brought the girls out for the party, didn't she!?! ;-)

IT'S STERLING DESIGNER DAY!!!!!
IT'S STERLING DESIGNER DAY!!!!!
IT'S STERLING DESIGNER DAY!!!!!

The HSN TS is a Purple Drusy Quartz, Amethyst and Iolite 10K Ring. I like drusy and I like iolite ... I do NOT like this ring. Besides, I will be too busy over at the Q with my Silver Designer Day to watch HSN. *sorry*

The ShopNBC OTV is an Olympus FE-340 8.0MP Digital Camera Package ... and I'm sure it's just awesome. At least it's not a watch or a leather jacket. Have I mentioned that it's Sterling Designer Day at the Q? Yeah, I could care less about cameras today. BTW, there is 20% off SWI watches online only through 8/12/08.

Today's Blue Plate Specials ... Mizz Lustra Knit

QVC's TSV is a Susan Graver Lustra Knit Metallic Beaded Tunic & Pants set. The QVC power that be have heard us ... free shipping! All the people rejoice! This set comes in 4 colors and is made out of something she calls Lustra Knit, which is supposed to be stretchy and comfy but not cling (but sounds like a super fabulous drag queen name to me). The reviews for her other Lustra clothes are mostly good. However, it ain't my thang, chickadees! Also, Susan can be a little ... umm ... difficult to watch at times. Glad she's offering petite though! Check out the other free shipping offers here.

The HSN TS is The Look by Randolph Duke 4-piece Wardrober. This comes in 4 colors and you get a jacket, tank, pants, and skirt all made out of a "soft stretchable polyester knit." Randolph needs to come up with a catchier name! Look at Susan Garver with her "Lustra Knit." You don't hear her calling it a nylon/spandex blend! On the surface this looks all mixy-matchy, but I would always end up wearing the pants, tank, and jacket together. I'm not much for skirts. I guess this probably would be good for traveling light though.

ShopNBC's OTV is a Sterling Silver / Platinum & 18K Vermeil Opaque Ruby / White Zircon Ring. I will start with the positive: this ring has a beautiful under gallery. Unfortunately no one but you will see it! The rest of it looks ... well, meh. The plating and the design look cheap. I don't have a problem with opaque ruby, I just don't like it to be faceted as if it were a clear ruby.

Today's Blue Plate Specials ... Thou Shalt Steel

HSN's TS is a 4.12ct Absolute Sparkle Cut Ring. Now we all know how Queen Bea *hearts* fake diamonds, but this is just u-g-l-y bad. This is what gives fake diamonds a bad name!

Let's take a tour, shall we? First, at a whooping 4 carats, the center stone has just flown past believable and even pushed beyond aspirational. The stone alone would be at least 50k (and that's one of average quality at best--certainly not the always-touted D-flawless).

Second, if you were so lucky as to get this stone, you certainly wouldn't set it in an cheap, flimsy setting like this one. It's made out of silver ... couldn't they have made it a little heavier without increasing the price to much? Yuck. Double yuck. Boo!!!

QVC's TSV is a Steel by Design 7" or 8" Set of 3 Hinged Bangles.
Oh how I love Steel by Design ... let me count the ways! However, I'm only preachin' about the steel-colored stuff because I haven't tried anything with the gold plating yet. I've heard that it's not as good because the color is either fake looking or wears off quickly.

Seriously, chickadees, give this line a try because it's awesome! Not expensive, durable, heavy, looks like platinum ... I just can't say enough about it.

And don't forget to watch Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer, tonight! He's amazing.

ShopNBC's OTV is a Laurel Burch Large Tote & Mini Bag Set. I like her cat collection and used to have some Laurel Burch thank you cards. The tote just isn't my thing though. Looks like something I should be keeping my knitting in and I don't knit. Check out Laurel's website here.

Today's Blue Plate Special ... Cage Match!

QVC's TSV is a M by Marc Bouwer V-Neck Knit Tunic w/ Embellishment in three different colors. I love, love, love this! Stylish, flattering, designer, wash-n-wear ... perfect. Plus, I get to watch that cute little Marc Bouwer in his skinny jeans and mushroom hair. Love him!

HSN's TS is a Slinky Brand Empire Tunic and Palazzo Pants Set in four different colors. Each color has a different neckline and embellishments. I 'm rather partial to the teal myself, but I just can't pull off palazzo pants. They make me look like a little tea pot--short and stout!

And of course this all leads to the age-old feud, HSN's Sliky vs. QVC's Citiknits. They just need to have a home shopping cage match smack down and be done with it.

ShopNBC's OTV is a Sterling Silver / 18K Rose or Yellow Vermeil Blue or Chocolate Diamond Ring. The design of this ring is good, but the execution leaves much to be desired. Those itty-bitty diamonds are barley noticeable and you know that vermeil is gonna wear off.

Today's Blue Plate Special ... Cheese in Bulk

HSN's TS is a Victoria Wieck 5.33ct Pink Amethyst and Gemstone 14K "Daisy" Ring. The Portugese-cut, round amethyst has 145-facet ... Queen Bea loves lots of facets cause she loves to sparkle! However, the gold looks ... skeletal? I get the whole daisy stem concept (and I love the bezel-set gems in the center of the flowers), but it's just not enough gold for me.
QVC's TSV is the FoodSaver Fully Automatic Stainless Steel Vacuum Sealer. I love buying fifteen pounds of cheese at a time at Sam's Club just as much as the next person, but for some reason I haven't gotten a vacuum sealer yet. Would I really use it or would it collect dust? I don't know.
ShopNBC's OTv is a Swiss Legend Men's 1.0ct Diamond Throttle Chronograph Stainless Steel Watch for $500. It's nice, but not $500 nice. I love the Cartier-style screw heads on the bezel and the mother of pearl face. And the "glass" is sapphire crystal, which I love because it doesn't scratch. But I could do without those little diamond dots and the ginormous price tag! And what's with the word "Throttle" in the name? Must be a man thang.

Today's Blue Plate Specials ... There's Gold in Them There Hills!

It's gold-is-really-freakin'-expensive-but-we-still-have-to-have Gold Rush Day! The already-gone TSV is Bold Triple Panther Link Bracelet 14K Gold, 10.1g (FYI ... that link will take you to a garden hose!!! That's the way it was on my TSV email, so that's the way I left it!).

I'm guessing they aren't ording huge quantities of anything gold these days, so there might be more sell-outs then usual for gold items. If the braeclet is $468.00 (not including S&H and tax), that comes out to $46.34/gram ... ouch! I'm soooo glad the Q prominantly displayed the gram weight. I wish they did this on everything! I just want to know what I'm paying for. It's not like I can reach through the TV to fell how heavy it is!

HSN has a Fiberbed with Removable Quilted Top as the TS. I don't have much to say about this other then, based on my experience as a mother, the removable top for washing seems to be a really good idea ... the real star of the day is SALE. It's clearance day so be sure to check it out. It'll probably be the last time you see certain collections on air *cough*lukastyle*cough*.

Oh! And make sure you sign up to win the HSN Sweepstakes! That $10,000 custom-made Jean Dousset ring belongs on my greedy little finger!

ShopNBC has the "The Elegance of Gisele" Table Lamp as their OTV. It looks pretty, but by the look on that Gisele lady's face, I think she's totally over holding up that damn lamp!

Blue Plate Special Daily Round Up ... the Calm After the Evil Pay Storm

Take a deep breath ................. now exhale! Evil pay day is over. Time to step into the recovery room.

QVC has a Breezies bra TSV that's supposed to keep you cool in the sweltering heat of summer. I wonder if that UltimAir lining really can keep the girls cool ... that sure would be nice. If you haven't noticed, it's hotter than hades out there lately.

The bra is also seamless, so it's supposed to look better under those thin, knit tops and also help with those unsightly back fat bulges. Considering that I just bought a bra that makes me look like I have 4 boobs, I might want to look closer at this one.

Don't forget that RLM will be on with some new pieces today! I thought about getting that Forgive/Forget ring, but then I realized that every time I looked at it, I would be reminded of who I was mad at and why! Read about Robert and the Olsen twins here.

HSN has a JVC 35xzoom flas memory camcorder for their TS. Using a memory card would be soooo much easier than that stupid, pain-in-the-arse digital tape I have to use in my camcorder.

Ken Paves, you know that cute little blond guy with the funny voice that is Jessica Simpson's hairstylist, will be coming out with a line of hair care products June 24 called Healthy Hair to add to the hair extensions line, hairdo. I'm always so tempted to buy that fake hair, but then I always geek out and cancel. I don't think that I'm responsible enough to take care of fake hair--it would turn into a rat's nest for sure.

ShopNBC has a beautifully-designed diamond ring for their OTV. The diamonds are so-so, but overall it's a beautiful ring. not gonna spend $900 for it, but I like it. Not bad Chuck Clemency!

Calm selections for our calm post-evil-pay-day recovery. Breathe, chickadees, breathe!

Queen Bea Eats Crow ... the Tacori Harlequin Ring Rocks!

So, I was complaining recently about how Tacori always lets me down, but that I just keep coming back for more. I also might have called their new stuff duds. I humbly say that I was wrong. I know the Harlequin ring isn't completely new (like the Crescent stuff), but it's new-ish and it is gorgeous!

It's detailed, designer, weighty, believable, and has a full under gallery (so it's comfortable!). I went up a size and I'm glad I did. Fits perfectly. Highly, highly recommend. However, it is a little thick, so if feeling the ring in between your fingers bothers you, then this isn't the ring for you.

And if you haven't already, read about that naughty Paul Tacorian! :-)

Queen Bea is Off to the Ball!!!

Today's the big day of the Ball ... focus group ... whatever, same thing! If you don't already know, Queen Bea was invited to participate in a focus group discussion on jewelry and gemstone preferences of people who buy from home shopping channels.

They also asked us to wear jewelry that we like and explain why we like it. So I have on a Steel By Design ring, which I love because it looks like platinum, it's heavy, it's durable, and it was cheap. I also have on the much loved (what's not to love!) Barbara Bixby Romeo & Juliet garnet ring. Sigh ... I *heart* this ring.

Here's what I had to say about what I do NOT want:

They need to know that trying to pass off drill bits as diamonds is bad, and that stretching out gold so thin that it dents when you blow on it is very bad, and they need to know that designer needs to really be designer, not just a famous name slapped on the same ol' crap.

I'm leaving in a few hours, chickadees, so if there's anything you want me to mention, please drop me a quick line at homeshoppingqueen@gmail.com.

Now if I could just find where I put that damn Diamonique tiara ...

Blue Plate Special Daily Round Up

The Q is quack-quack-quackin' up a storm with their Quacker Factory TSV. I'm not a Quacker, but if you are, this 4-piece set is probably a good deal. Honestly though, I think it's a little too tame--if you're gonna quack, QUACK LOUD! QUACK PROUD! Go for the rhinestone-encrusted golden duck ... get the fiber optic light-up Christmas sweater, for the love of all that quacks! (I was actually quite tempted to get that one! What fun!). BTW, if you haven't seen Jeanne Bice's recent slip of the tongue, check it out here.

It's Suzanne Somers day on HSN! She's breaking out her signature trilliant-cut faux diamonds. The goldtone rings (clear, lavender, or champagne) just aren't doing it for me. They look very uncomfortable and the "goldtone" scares me. However, that little "crown and tiara" ring set looks perfect for the Queen Bea of Home Shopping ... I mean, it's got it all! A crown, a tiara, fake diamonds, goldtone, and it's made by Suzanne Somers! It doesn't get much cheesier than that, chickadees!

ShopNBC ... ShopNBC ... what is wrong with them lately?! Their OTV is a classic-looking Pearlfection simulated South Sea pearl necklace, bracelet, and stud earring set. Measuring in at a whopping 14mm, the pearls are absolutely ginormous--think The Flintstones. The set is pretty and looks well made (I particularly like the clasp), so what's the problem?

Cultured pearls have gone waaaay down in price and up in size lately, so why charge almost $100 for fake pearls? I don't mind fake pearls, but the price should be significantly lower than the real-deal. I guess if you are a stickler for the pearls being absolutely perfectly round with no pits or rings, than this is the set for you.

Jewelry Television has free shipping on clearance items with the code DISCEMFS.

Last, but not least ... remember that chef on HSN, Scott Conant? He just opened Scarpetta, an Italian restaurant in New York City. A snooty review can be read here. Is Scott even still with HSN? I could only find 6 items on the website and they were all on clearance.

Paul Tacorian ... Cheap People Need Not Apply

Looks like a certain Mr. Paul Tacorian set up a MySpace page a few years back and then forgot about it ... there aren't any friends or updates. Last log in on 11/8/2006.

The hip-hop-hating, super-mature, party boy likes to smoke, drink, and just have fun, but isn't a fan of "lame" or "cheap" people, which is sooooo incredibly ironic since he's now selling fake diamonds on QVC. Not that I'm implying anything!

On a plus note, he said that his mom was his hero. Awww ... I'm a sucker for that!

Here's his profile:

Blue Plate Special Round Up ...

The Q's TSV is an air conditioner, and as much as I like air conditioning, I'm soooo not interested in watching air-conditioner presentations all day. It's colder! It's quieter! It's smaller! It's cheaper! Ugh! Boring.

HSN has a big-a$$ TV for their Today's Special. Again, as much as I love to watch TV, call me crazy, but I do not like to watch people blabbering on about TV's on TV. Anyway, it's Host Pick Day too, whic would be cool if I thought that the hosts really got to pick what they wanted to present, but I'm not convinced.

ShopNBC is selling a 1/2-ct. diamond (think drill bit) vermeil ring as their OTV. At less than $150, it's cheap for a diamond ring, but I think this is one of those times that you get what you pay for. At least they are doing a big Silver Spectacular for most of the day.

Overall, not the best specials today. But, I am curious to see the new Andrea Ventura jewelry collection on QVC today at 3 p.m. And, of course, I can't wait until the Tacori show tonight. Tomorow will definitely be a better day!

At least Jewelry Television is having free shipping.

On a side note, I ran accross Debby Mayne's blog today. A friend of hers, who works for HSN, invited Debby to bring-a-friend week at the super special HSN employee store--and girlfriend was able to score some serious bargains.

First of all, I didn't even know that there was an employee store. And, secondly, how do I get to go? And, thirdly, not fair! not fair! not fair! Humph. (Queen Bea crosses her arms and pouts). She was even able to get the dang Huggable Hangers to disply her loot (without getting those annoying dents in the shoulders of the shirts, I might add).

Priness Di (inspired) Jewelry Sneak Peak

So Paul Burrell's new line of jewelry based on what he thinks Princess Diana would like will be premiering tonight on ShopNBC. I hate to admit it, but from what I've seen so far, it's not bad. It is, however, hella expensive!

J181983 - 18K WG 1.95ct Diamond Pave Ring
This ring can be yours for the rock bottom price of $3,699.95--that's 5 Value Pays of only $739.99. I do like it though, but I'm a sucker for pave.

J181978 - 14K White & Cognac Diamond Cross Pendant w/ Chain
At only $799.95 , this is one of the most affordable items in the collection, which probably means that they brought in huge quantities of this one. It's nice, but not 800-dollars worth of nice.
J181980 - 18K Tri-Color 1.14ct Diamond Flower Ring
For only $1,699.95 , this flower ring can be yours! I'm not much of a flower person, but this ring ain't bad at all. I like the 3D effect.

J181973 - 18K 2.29ct Diamond Earrings
These earrings are on sale for a mere pittance at only $3,299.95 (15% off folks--hurry up before they're gone! I'll be grabbing a pair for me, my mom, and the babysitter.)
Honestly, this is why I have a deep and forbidden love of fake diamonds. These prices are ridiculous! How many times would I wear those earrings? For 3k, they better pick up my dry cleaning or something. Jeez!

Look for the show tonight with Wes and Pam McCoy and tomorrow night with Libby Floyd at 7 p.m. both nights.

ShopNBC Gets it Right for Once!

ShopNBC finally got it right!!! This gorgeous ring from Sameul B. is exactly what they should be looking for in an Our Top Value (OTV) instead of the lame old-lady earrings and leather jackets in June they've been peddling recently. It's designer (not faux celebrity "designer" either), it's solid, well-made, unique, and the citrine and amethyst stone color is exquisite.

It's much better to get a high quality semi-precious gem, than some sorry drill bit excuse for a diamond (don't even get me started on the emeralds). And at only $74.28??? As Lisa Robertson would say, it's practically free.

I do wonder if the prongs are gold or if they are just plated. Makes a big difference. I don't care what anybody says, the plating always wears off.

So ShopNBC PTB (powers that be), quit exploiting Princess Di and put your efforts into finding more OTV's like this one.

Tacori Crescent Line is a Dud

The new Tacori Crescent line is premiring on the Q on June 15th. After looking at the "real" Tacori Crescent Silhouette Line (example pictured to the left), I had some high expectations. And, other than the emerald ring, these just don't do it for me.

I'm a glutton for punishment when it comes to this line. I always get super excited and I'm always let down. I just keep coming back for more. Why? Why do I do this?

If you do see soemthing you like, be ready with guns and credit cards blazin' to order it quickly on the 15th because most Tacori does see out fast (except for the few pieces they order thousands and thousands of that we're forced to revisit all day long over and over and over again).
