Let Them Eat Cricut Cake!

HSN recently launched the Cricut Cake machine, which cuts designs out of gum paste or fondant for decorating cakes. I had no idea that this seemingly innocent machine was steeped in controversy.

The vendor rep for the Cricut Cake machine is cake decorator Carrie Biggers of Carrie’s Cakes. On a recently blog entry, there were hints of the controversy:
There has been some controversy about the Cricut and the rules and regulations surrounding it, I personally am not prepared to go into all of that, (Carrie will be able to address that) however I would love to show off the beautiful cakes that have been created using the Cricut Cake.
From what I could find, it appears that they might be referring to the issues professional cake decorators were having selling their cakes made using the Cricut Cake. The manufacturer, Prvo Craft, recently released an official Angel Policy authorizing the sale of “up to 10,000 completed projects annually.” However, they aren’t authorized to sell “individual, unassembled cuts.”

But that wasn’t the real controversy.

The real controversy is figuring out who exactly invented it.

Cake Designer Linda McClure, who trained Carrie Biggers to use the Cricut Cake machine, posted a long and detailed statement on her website claiming to be the original inventor of the machine’s concept and the proper techniques needed to use it.

The rumor mill and the crafting message boards were fueled with anger and accusations on both sides. In a rare move, Provo Craft posted a statement directly addressing the allegations. In response, Linda McClure posted a point-by-point rebuttal of their statement (Linda's comments in bold):
It is not typically our practice to publicly discuss private business matters, but because of the misperceptions that circulated this week on the message boards, we believe it is appropriate to share a brief statement to clarify the facts about the development of Cricut Cake.
In 2009, Linda McClure approached Provo Craft about a method of cutting gum paste, a method with which Provo Craft was already familiar and whose documented development dates as far back as 2007.
Where is the proof they were working on this? When I first presented my method, they had no idea you could use a cricut for cake decorating. They did not know what gum paste was, the product we use in cake decorating. It took me 30 minutes to figure this out on my own. I did a very intense search on the internet looking for any information about this method. I developed this method to perfection and presented this to Provo Craft.
We reached an informal agreement that provided for Ms. McClure to be compensated at fair market value for her time and consulting services as we prepared to launch Cricut Cake in 2010.
You paid me travel expenses and a fee for doing demonstrations for you at CHA. There was never an agreement for consulting services, you did send me a contract the week before CHA which I told Jon Lee I would not sign. One part of the contract was you wanted me to sign over all my copyrighted materials. I told Jon Lee I would not do that and that my attorney would look at the proposed agreement and get back with Provo Craft.
She accepted, performed certain activities, and was compensated accordingly.
That’s right, you paid travel expenses and a fee for my demos.
More recently, Provo Craft and Ms. McClure discussed the possibility of extending a formal consulting agreement. We believe that some of her requests, including both financial and non-financial terms, were unrealistic. Further, Linda was adamant that her requests were non-negotiable. As a result we chose not to enter a long term agreement with her, and unfortunately our relationship deteriorated.
Provo Craft called and talked to my attorney about his counter contract. I will not go into detail, but I did ask for an amount more in the line of the value of what they had gotten from me. I did not cut off negotiations with them. They asked for a conference call and I showed up at my attorney’s office at the appointed time. I waited there for an hour and no call came in.
Provo Craft’s initial research and development for Cricut Cake began in 2007. Since then, Provo Craft has conducted extensive market research and consulted with industry leaders, and both professional and aspiring cake decorators. We’re grateful for the valuable input and the enthusiastic support of these individuals, and we look forward to our continued relationship with them. We also hope you share our excitement for the fun possibilities that Cricut Cake will bring to creative kitchens everywhere.
It is my opinion that Provo Craft would not have this new product if it were not for me developing the technique and showing it to them.
Linda's entire story can be read at her website here. But these four points is what she states it all boils down to:
1) We presented this cake decorating technique to Provo Craft
2) We were promised a non compete, non discloser agreement
3) They did not give us the agreement we asked for
4) They took my ideas, and did not give me one penny for my invention

So who's telling the truth? I’m trying my best to be objective, but I have to admit, I’m biased. My instinct is to always take the side of the little guy against the big, powerful corporation.

Although it’s a long and expensive process, Linda did apply for a patent and is awaiting approval. If she is approved, how this will affect Cricut Cake and their relationship with HSN? It will interesting to see how all of this unfolds.

I *Heart* Adrienne Arpel

I don't know what it is about Adrienne, but whenever she's on HSN, I am completely hypnotized by her.

I love the way she sweeps her bangs out of her face and leans in towards the camera when she's getting serious about educating you on the finer points of argon oil or hyaluronic acid.

I love how she smears lotions, potions, and makeup all over the models' faces without much regard for how much she's using or where it ultimately ends up (the demonstrations with the multi-colored concealers are by far my favorite part of the Adrienne show).

I also seriously appreciate that she uses ... ahem ... more "mature" models to demonstrate her products. Seeing a smooth-skinned, dewy-faced 18-year-old model happily using an anti-wrinkle cream just doesn't do it for me.

The models Adrienne uses also appear to be clean-faced with no makeup on before she starts slapping on her various face paints (and I do mean slap, Adrienne is not know for her gentle touch!), which is much more than I can say for many other beauty vendors *cough*BE*cough* who seem to put an entire face of perfect makeup on with one easy sweep of their magic kabuki brush.

I love her big jewelry, her pulled face, and her pouty fish lips. I've never tried any of her products, but I'm always tempted.

Queen Bea's Death Bed Confessions

Alright, alright … I admit it! I caved. I’m weak. So sue me. While I was suffering with the creeping death plague flu, I accidentally—allegedly--bought the Serious Skin Care Today’s Special on HSN.

It’s not my fault though! My lips were chapped, my nose was raw, and my eyes looked all sunken and sallow. I was horribly dehydrated. Normally, aside from the infamous T-zone, I’m as dry as the Sahara Desert (as Lisa Robertson at the Q likes to say), so being sick was just adding kindling to the fire.

And all day long the lovely Jennifer (Flavin Stallone) kept talking about all the rich moisture and luxurious hydration I was going to enjoy with the her Solutions for Dry Skin Olive Oil Kit. And it was only like $14 to get it home and I could always return it, right? Plus, if you sign up for auto-ship, you get free shipping. I am a sucker for free shipping. And I can always cancel the auto-ship. Jennifer even said I could.

For goodness sake, I wasn’t thinking straight. My brain had been replaced by mucus and a nice lady on the TV was explaining how she had the answers to all my problems in her Holy Grail of olive oil products. So, yes, through my haze of sickness I somehow managed to correctly order the TS. They do make ordering easy, don’t they?

Props to HSN, I got my order yesterday morning.

Here’s the thing though. So far, I love it! Especially that Omega 3 serum. I have no idea if it fights lines and wrinkles since I’ve only used it twice, but it does hydrate. My extremely dry face is now … dewy and soft. I have never been dewy or soft. If I could bathe in this stuff, I would.

The shower cream and the body lotion are both good. I haven’t had a chance to try the mask yet, but it’s supposed to leave my face smooth and supple, which will go quite nicely with dewy and soft.

The replenishing oil and the cleanser are both good, but squirt all over the place when you push down on the pump. I know Jennifer doesn’t like to spend much on packaging, but trying to hunt down the product on the bathroom counter is rather annoying.

The facial firming pads are good. My face feels tighter, but I don’t break out in hives or get all red and blotchy as my dry and sensitive skin is prone to do. The top ones will dry out, so I would recommend storing them upside down.

The squalane is interesting. I don’t think that I could use it if it were shark squalane, but this is from olives. The roller is good and bad. Sometimes it just gets stuck and doesn’t want to roll so you have to push down really hard or try to get it going with your fingers. It also smells bad to me—sort of a strong floral scent. I hate floral scents, but that’s just me. I decided to just use it on my fingernails. Like my skin, they are dry and peal all the time. Maybe this will help. I don’t know yet.

I don’t care for the ugly purse that came with it, but I’ll give it to my niece or something. The subscription to Self will be nice too.

All in all, this is a great kit—especially the omega 3 serum. I’ve heard complaints about the smell, but I don’t think the olive oil line smells bad at all. If you like the smell of olive oil, you probably won’t mind these products.

Pass the Bon-Bons: Peg Bundy Designs for HSN

Yes, you too can channel your inner Peg Bundy with HSN's stylish Today's Special: Destination Style™ New York by Pat Field Printed Tee or Tunic.

All I can say to this is hell to the no!

Does HSN and Patricia Fields think that their core demographic consists of prostitutes, strippers, and trailer trash???

Honestly, who can get away with wearing something like this? I'm sure I could wear it to the office or my son's soccer game ... maybe the PTA meeting? Only in Harper Valley, baby!

HSN TS: Pork Chop Feet

Bellini Croco-Embossed 2-Band Stretch Comfort Sandal

Item# 317-899
$29.90
Sizes: 51/2 - 12
Medium or Wide Width
Choice of Colors:
Charcoal - dark gray upper, gray lining, silvertone hardware.
Silver - silvertone upper, light gray lining, silvertone hardware.
Bronze - metallic brown upper, light brown lining, goldtone hardware.
Teal - metallic blue upper, light blue lining, silvertone hardware.
Red - metallic red and pink upper, pink lining, goldtone hardware.

First, I want to give a shout out to HSN for all the wide width shoes they have (not that Queen Bea has big pork chop feet with splaying monkey toes or anything because I'm pretty sure she has petite Cinderella-esque feet). Seems like shoe designers/manufacturers have forgotten that not everyone has a medium-width foot.

Not that I can relate, but I know people with very narrow feet and they have just as hard of a time finding shoes that actually fit them. So big props to HSN for trying to be accommodating.

This shoe doesn't really move me either way. Not sure why the bottom lining is leather, but the top is faux ... but what's a shopping channel without a little faux.

HSN TS: Black is the New Yellow

14K Diamond-Cut "Colors of Italy" "Glitter" Necklace

Item: 325-982

$94.95
2 FlexPays of $47.48

Choice of 17, 19, or 21-inch length
Yellow Napoli, Green Firenze, Pink Venezia, Black Milano (black rhodium-plated), Brown Terra Di Siena, White Cortina (rhodium-plated) or Amber Roma
Made in Italy (Yeah!)

HSN actually posted that the necklace was 2.07 grams, although they didn't specify which length weighed that much. I so, so, so wish that these shopping channels would get their crap together and always post the gram weight. With today's gold prices it's even more important to know what you're buying.

[rant] It's not like I can reach in through the television and snatch the chain out of the host's hand and feel it for myself, so a gram weight is all I have to go by. And, no, the host trying to explain how the chain feels just ain't gonna cut it. They say misleading things like: this ring has alot of gold presence ... or, this bracelet has a bold gold look ... ugh! Just say it like it is already! I do not want the look of or the presence of ... Queen Bea needs her gold to be hefty like her! [/rant]

I like that gold is becoming more adventurous with color. There's no reason why we have to stick to just yellow, rose, and white! With alloys, all sorts of beautiful colors are possible ... the ones that are just plated to achieve the color do concern me though. Plating always rubs off eventually. Trust me, I always have to get my white gold wedding band re-rhodium plated (while trying to dodge hungry sales people at the jewelry store).

HSN Today's Special: Cougars Unite!

Marilyn Miglin Pheromone Precious Jewels Collection

Item# 327-539
$39.95
No FlexPays

The cougars are licking their paws and on the prowl today! Queen Bea quietly purrs meow ...

Marilyn describes this scent as a "man magnet," so if you aren't trying to get a little action, don't buy this perfume! Having a Marilyn TS is worth it just to watch this classy, funny lady and all her entertaining and randy call-in testimonials from happy cougars.

Reviews on the actual perfume are mixed as are all reviews on all perfumes. Scent is so subjective. Wear whatever you love as long as you don't put so much of it on that it gives Queen Bea a headache! Pulse points, people ... pulse points.

Wonder if HSN tested this out on their new "weather boy," Maven?

On a side note, Marilyn's husband, Lee Miglin, was murdered by Andrew Cunanan--the same man who killed Versace. Lee Miglin was a real estate developer credited with creating the concept of the business park (integration of office and warehouse space).

HSN Today's Special: It Slices! It Dices!

Item# 322-765
$19.90
No Flex Pays!

So this little gadget is supposed to be able to do just about everything but make you breakfast in bead--cut glass, cut tile, cut paper in a perfect circle, sharpen your scissors. measure something, strip wires--and all in a delightful fabric pouch with drawstring closure.

Everything but the blades is made in China. The blades are made in Germany, so they might be of decent quality. Me thinks HSN is trying to cash in on Father's Day! And actually, considering that men don't tend to be repeat customers (a lesson ShopNBC has learned the hard way!), getting ladies to buy gadgets and gizmos for all the men in their lives is probably the best way to market this type of product.

This seems like a much better tie-in to the Get Smart movie than the Peter Thomas Roth skincare kit!

HSN Today's Special 6/02/08: Yard Rugs

Patio Palace Indoor/Outdoor Adeline Rug
Item# 336-111
$159.90
4 Flexpays of $39.98
Black, sage or terra cotta
Measures approx. 7' 6-1/2"W x 9' 10"L

I always wondered if these indoor/outdoor rugs would work well in the kitchen, but I've never heard of anyone doing it. I haven't even seen someone try it on one of those many, many home makeover design shows. So maybe there is a fatal flaw in my master plan that I haven't figured out yet.

1.7 oz. Rapid Transport C Infused Night Elixir - Adrienne's rich, super-emollient concentrated cream helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on over-40 skin. It contains a combination of ingredients, including a skin-penetrating, pH neutral, stable form of Vitamin C that is transported through the skin faster than other forms of Vitamin C, and is converted to ascorbic acid by the action of enzymes in the skin. The formulation acts as an antioxidant that helps fight environmental aggressors, which helps diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and gives skin a plump look. Deep-penetrating liposomes without feeling greasy to give skin a younger look and feel.
Magnifying mirror - this 2-sided makeup mirror has a regular mirror on 1 side and a 2X magnification mirror on the other side. The easel stand allows you to tilt the mirror to your needs. Embellished with black trim and stand, the mirror measures approx. 7-1/4""H x 5-1/2"W.

What Queen Bea Says: Queen Bea loves to watch Adrienne because she's sooo entertaining; however, it's hard to take beauty advice from a lady that's pulled tighter than the Queen's control top briefs after a night at the all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet (Yes, I'm looking at you, Joan. But really I love you even more!). Her products always look greasy to me, but that could be just the way they show on TV (hmmm ... perhaps Queen Bea does need a 46" HDTV).

The one product that consistently gets raves on the product reviews and on all the message boards is her meltdowns--they smell like dessert and melt away all the dirt and makeup n your face. I'm thinking that if you want to try this line, that would be the place to start. Enter the word "meltdown" in Queen Bea's custom Google toolbar--which only searches the home shopping networks--to find them.

Another thing I love about Adrienne is that she uses models of all ages. For reals, y'all! Everything from knee high to a grasshopper to older than dirt. Queen Bea will freely wave her magic remote wand and change the channel if some stupid vendor tries to sell the latest miracle cream by demonstrating it on a dewy 18-year-old model. Ugh!

And in case you didn't already know, Adrienne is really Adrien Arpel--but she can't use that name on HSN.

14K WG or YG 1.00ct Diamond Buckle Ring

$497.90
Five value pays of $99.58
Choice of yellow or white 14k gold

What They Say: A modern twist on a timeless design. This buckle style ring is crafted in your choice of polished 14K white or yellow gold. It features 84 round cut diamonds in prong settings and 19 round cut diamonds in channel settings. The total diamond weight is approximately 1.00ct with a color of H-I and a clarity of I2-I3. The setting size is 9/16" x 3/4" with a height of 1/8". It also has an undergallery for added beauty and comfort.

About the History of Belt Buckles: Belt buckles were invented in the 1600s for purely one very important utilitarian purpose - to keep up the pants of British sailors. Eyelets and rope and string were fashioned for them originally, but proved useless once the pants got wet. The sailors attached leather belts to buckles and the look started a fashion trend which eventually became a wardrobe staple.

During Victorian age, buckle rings were given as a token of love and affection. The romantic notion behind this symbol is that the couple fit together "like a buckle and belt." This buckle design twinkles with a reminder of the past while adding flashes of contemporary allure to your latest outfits.

What Queen Bea Says: The Queen greatly appreciates that ShopNBC tells you the grade of their diamonds--even when it's close to drill bit quality. The diamonds even look grey in the picture. Yuk! This is why Queen Bea loves her some fake diamonds! Diamond quality aside, I still don't like the design. Where's the part of the belt buckle that sticks in the belt hole? This doesn't even look like a buckle. And the gold on the back of the ring looks thin. This ring is simply a hot royal mess.

Nature's Code Omega-3 Fish Oil w/EPA & DHA

  • 90-day supply of 180 softgels for $16.32
  • Can be set up for auto-delivery.
  • Sorry, no easy pay on this one ... good grief, it's only $16.32!

What They Say: What is it: A nutritional supplement containing 1200mg of concentrated fish oil with 360mg of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which have been shown to help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.Who is it for: Anyone who wants to help protect and maintain their cardiovascular health and lead a healthy lifestyle, including current coronary patients as well as those at risk for heart disease. Why is it different: These softgels deliver a mega-dose of nutrients that would be near-impossible to achieve through diet alone. In fact, you would need to eat over 11 cans of chunk light tuna per week to match the amount of omega-3 received from simply taking two gels daily.Regularly tested for strength and purity, the fish oil used in these supplements is free of detectable levels of mercury. Plus, the pina colada-scented enteric coating protects each gel until it reaches your lower intestine, reducing fishy odor, taste, and aftertaste while increasing absorption. How do I use it: Take one softgel twice a day with a full glass of water.

What Queen Bea Says: Not exactly a glamorous TSV! Hard to put the Lisa Robertson patented "old money-Madison Avenue" spin job on this one. However, if you hate fish and seafood with a fiery passion like I do and also have the family history of heart disease that I was blessed with, this is a much needed product. Most of the reviews I read were positive, but there were a few nasty fish burps along the way. Honestly, I don't think that you can make a fish oil product and not have some nay-sayers--we are talking about fish oil after all.

3.8ct Absolute™ Round Set of 2 Bangle Bracelets
  • $69.00 for a set of two bangles.
  • Two Flexpays of $34.95.
  • Choice of 7" or 8" size in either silver or vermeil.

What They Say: "X" marks the superior elegance of this Absolute Round Set of 2 Bangle Bracelets. Gleaming with an icy sparkle, these bangle bracelets each boast a row of channel-set, round Absolute simulated diamonds (approx. 3mm) across the top. "X"-shaped designs at each end of the row add a sophisticated touch to the feminine piece. Wear these bangles together for a luxurious layered look, or wear one alone for a contemporary, chic appearance.

What Queen Bea Says: I loves me some fake diamonds! This, however, is not my favorite. The channel setting is nice since prongs snag everything but money and men, but I don't like the little X's on the sides--just seems to cheapen the look. Plus, when you wear two of them, you definitely aren't going for the "look of real." You might luck out and score one diamond bangle, but you sure as heck aren't going to buy two exactly alike. They should have made them different for a more real look.

Part of this is my personal dislike of bangles. I love the look and the cool clanky sound they make, but I have the worst time navigating throughout the day while wearing bangles. I bang them into everything (hence the name, huh? Never thought about it before!) and rack up alot of damage points. For this reason, I will only buy super cheap bangles ... as in clearance at Wal-Mart cheap. But if you fair better than me with bangles and aren't particularly looking for this to pass as "real" (I personally don't think that all of it has to, but some are very persnickety about that), this could be fun to wear in the summer with a cute little sleeveless top. I certainly don't have the arms for that look, but if you are so blessed , then more power to you. And I am sooooo jealous!

Sterling Silver Gemstone Choice Heart-Shaped Pendant & Ring Set

  • Both the pendant and the ring for $138.42.
  • Three value pays of 46.14.
  • Choice of red jasper, labradorite, or tiger eye.

What They Say: Highlight your look with this luminous pair! This distinctive duo features a romantic heart-shaped pendant with a contrasting oval-shaped ring. Both of these stunning pieces are crafted from polished sterling silver and are available in your choice of red jasper, labradorite or tiger eye.
Gemstone Choices:
Red Jasper ring and pendant with garnet accent stone in pendant
Labradorite ring and pendant with permanent irradiated Swiss blue topaz accent stone in pendant
Tiger Eye ring and pendant with citrine accent stone in pendant

What Queen Bea Says: These are some big mamer jammers! Wow! The pendant measures 2-9/16"L x 1-9/16"W with carat weights between 170 and 223. This is not for the shy or faint of heart. The ring measures 1-9/16"L x 13/16"W and has a setting height of 1/4" with carat weights between 32 and 41 carats. So this would not be an everyday type of ring for most people. It is a statement ring, which, to me means that the rest of the outfit has to work around the ring as opposed to the usual way of looking at accessories as complimenting the outfit. However, even though these pieces are huge, they are clean. Not lots of frills and crazy designs. I think that balances out the size. Also, the Offerings collection is know for their goddess faces and other unique designs that might be too much for some people. This could be a great way to try out the collection. I personally have never bought anything from Offerings, but not because I don't like their jewelry. I just haven't been about to settle on something. Right now I'm leaning towards getting a really big Druzy piece because this Queen loves to sparkle!
