Dog Days

I will probably be out of commission today. I am in the midst of trying to rescue a dog that someone abandoned (long story that makes me angry just to think about).

She's old and scared and I'm trying to set her up in my garage with an old mattress and her blanket. I wouldn't normally put a dog in the garage, but I have to keep her separated from my other animals for a while for obvious reasons.

I feel so bad for her. At this point it's me or the pound, which will put her down since she's not highly adoptable. Poor thing.

  1. BRAVO to you, Queen Bee !! I have done the same thing, only with cats. Cannot bear to see one abandoned. Please let us all know the outcome !!

  2. Thank you QB for your selfless service to this poor animal. I too have had a couple of rescues (like the last poster, I have a cat) and it breaks my heart to see one abused or abandoned. I enjoy your site very much, but this is the first time I have been moved to comment. Bravo, bravo, bravo to you! Please keep us updated on this baby's progress!

  5. I hate any kind of abuse-but especially animals! I volunteer at our
local shelter-and luckily we don't have an age cut off like many do,
It breaks my heart to see the older dogs be so confused and sad.
If smaller, they mostly get adopted but not always. We even had one
that was 15 yrs. old!! thank you for caring and helping.

  6. It is so wonderful what you are doing for this poor dog! I have a few rescues myself and I couldn't imagine not having them, I am so lucky they found their way to me! I was a foster house for one of them but knew as soon as she came in and curled up on one of the dog beds that she had found her forever home.

  7. Bless you for this! I am a fellow "animal person" and get so angry about abandoned cats and dogs. I wish you the best of luck in rescuing the dog and hope you will keep us posted. You are not only bright and witty, but also have a very good heart.

  8. Good for you and good luck....I had something similar happen to me many years ago, but I was renting a small apartment at the time, no pets allowed...I couldn't find the owner or anyone to take her in, and I had to put her in a shelter...it broke my heart.

I hope all works out...please post a followup.

  9. QB-What a wonderful selfless act. I can't understand how someone can just throw an animal away like trash. I have rescue dogs and am Involved in a rescue organization in my area and it is the most rewarding thing I do

  10. Thank you for all the encouraging comments and emails. I truly appreciate all your support. It means a lot.

Lucy is doing well. She was sooo skittish at first, but quickly came around when she realized that she was getting all kinds of love and attention.

She is quite enamored of her water bowl since she's been living in a house with no utilities or water for over three months.

We were also able to take her for a walk, which she loved! She didn't have a collar so we had to wrap the leash around her neck. I'll be stopping by the store to pick up a collar today.

As to my other animals (we have 2 old cats and a dog) ... that's the big question. The dogs got along great outside. However, my dog was not amused with Lucy being inside the house--understandably so. They would get along for a few minutes and then decide that they were going to have a smack down. And we discovered that Lucy likes to chase cats.

All in all I thought she did great, but obviously there will be challenges. Her original owner would like to have her back eventually. I don't know about that. She's not abusive, but she just isn't stable enough to handle a dog.

I'm just taking this one day at a time.

Again ... thank you so much!!!

  11. Good for you Queen Bea. Maybe if your other dog can meet the new one on neutral turf they will be able to check each other out better.

  12. God sent this dog to you for a reason. I have had many lost or unwanted pets over the years and found them to be the most loving, grateful and sweetest animals I ever had. It sometimes takes a little time, but it is well worth it. I have three cats and 2 dogs right now, and three were strays. My cats are 18, 17 and 17. My dogs are 9. We have to keep the cats in their own sunroom away from the dogs, but that's ok. You solve problems as they come up. God Bless you.

  13. I had three dogs when I took in a stray terrier mix. The other two were fine about it, but my chihuahua with an attitude literally took eight weeks to come around. He would growl at the terrier every time it went by and would pick fights. Then, literally all of sudden, I look down and the chihuahua is playing with him. If they get along outside there's hope. God bless you.

  14. Kudos to you, Queen Bea. You're a bona fide Good Person.

Same thing happened here Christmas Day with a young cat. My idiot next door neighbor was about to dump him in an industrial factory area. Stupid woman - it would have been a more humane thing (but unthinkable) to take a brick to his head than leave him out, sick and in the middle of winter. But he's now ours, and it's so much fun to have a kitten in the house again.

If I can help in any way, please give a shout-out. I mean it. There's something a bit off with a person who doesn't like animals.
