Scum of the Earth

The last few weeks have been ... interesting. My grandmother just went through a horrible and humiliating experience.

Two of her grandchildren (my cousins) are currently serving in Iraq. She got a terrifying call from one of them in the middle of the night. He said that he was on leave and was in a car wreck. He was at the hospital injured badly--his mouth and face especially, which is why he sounded a little strange on the phone. He desperately needed some money wired to him ... I'm sure you can guess where this is going. It was an elaborate scam to take her for all the money that she had in her bank account. It wasn't much, but it was all she had. She's 82 years old and in poor health. How evil do you have to be to prey on elderly relatives of people serving in the military? It's disgusting! So now she is left humiliated and broke. The whole thing just breaks my heart.

I don't think that there any way to get the money back. She did report everything to the police once she realized that she had been conned. My grandmother has always been an intelligent, proud, and independent woman, so I think the entire ugly episode has affected her spirit more than anything. Being looked upon by cops, relatives, and anyone who read the local paper as old and easily confused has hurt her more than losing the money. In any case, even if those despicable people are caught, the money is probably long gone by now.

After dealing with that, I had lots of home and work life to catch up on. Not to mention planning all the curriculum for the upcoming school year! (I homeschool my son for those of you who may not know.)

So if you emailed me and didn't hear back, I should be getting in touch with you shortly.

And by the way, I have an amazing interview with one and only Charles Winston that I will be posting soon!

  1. I missed you and am glad you are back...but am so sorry to hear this terrible story about your grandma. I hope with time she is able to put it further behind her and be able to focus on happier things.

  2. Bless her heart! Please tell her she was trying to be a good person and unfortunately was taken advantage of. It happens to the best of us. Please tell her not to be humiliated..she only tried to help someone she loves. I feel for her.

  3. I' sorry for your troubles, but your blog has increasingly become more personal. If I wanted that, I'd log on to Facebook. What I come here for is home shopping news, which has been sorely lacking here over the past year.

We all have troubles. We all should leave them at home, not at the "office" as it were.

Maybe it's time for me to move on.

    1. Man, you suck. You really do.

    2. Agree, thought this site would share into about home shopping products. Instead it just bashes people's opinions. Probably should just shut the site down.

  4. I disagree with the previous writer - you should use your blog for whatever YOU want. I hope you don't let the grouches get you down. I certainly enjoy reading whatever it is you choose to write about.

  8. I'm not a violent person by nature, and in most cases I deplore capital punishment.....but for people who victimize the elderly and the less fortunate, can we please bring back burning at the stake?

As for the comment about not making your blog personal.....it's your blog, and share anything you wish. If people think that it's easy to come up with new ideas everyday, especially when there are family issues and real life situations to deal with.....well, they should try doing what you do for about a year.

Me? I'm suffering from August Dawg Daze blaaas and haven't written a thing worth a damn in weeks.....and have no guilt whatsoever.

  10. The so called 'mean poster' said in her opinion the blog was too personal and then opined that maybe she (the poster) should move on.

By the way, Michelle, if comments start getting deleted like you advocate, many people will be moving on.

  11. Michelle, when a blog has ads and advertisers, its beholden on the blogger to keep it on topic. I agree with the "mean" person.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Actually I had not thought about the fact that advertisers are being misled...they are probably under the impression they are paying for info re: home shopping..... The previous post makes a really good point.

  13. I am also in agreement with the so-called "mean" poster- this blog is sorely lacking in the home shopping department, and has become "Queen Bea's" outlet for complaining about her life troubles.
Let's face it, we ALL go through difficulties... but the reason we are giving her blog the time of day is our interest in home shopping- not her grandmas!!!

I've Googled and found a NEW home shopping blog that I will be subscribing to- here's the link if anyone else is interested:

    http://homeshoppingista.wordpress.com/

  14. P.S. I am NOT affiliated with the Homeshippingista's blog- I just think it's a great alternative to what this blog used to be.

  15. I work for a consumer advocate and unfortunately this is a very common occurence ... Hugs to your Grandma and I'm very sorry.

  16. Thanks to one of the "Anonymous" posters above for the new link http://homeshoppingista.wordpress.com/ I think I'll go over there and take a look. Nothing for nothing, Home Shopping Queen, but maybe you could keep a private journal or personal blog for your more intimate family stuff.

  17. Come on, she hasn't posted since July 9th and then she posts this? If she were posting a lot and threw in some personal posts, that'd be totally different.

But she is ripping off her advertisers at this point and the extremely sparse posting coupled with the naval gazing is too much. Time to remove this from my bookmark.

  18. Where's that "amazing interview with one and only Charles Winston that I will be posting soon!" ?

  19. Hey Shopping Queen - Sorry to hear about your grandma's misfortune. My dad is elderly and was conned out of money. If you file a police report and contact the bank, she should get 95% if her money back. I am glad you posted this because I have never heard of such scam and people should know about this occurance. BTW, thanks for having this site.

  20. Okay seriously. If you want to make a Grandma Blog, then make one! But the rest of us were coming here for home shopping news... I'm following the link above as well! homeshopingista here I come!

  21. WOW i can't believe some of the comments on this blog. Its HSQ's blog if she wants to blog that she scratched her butt then she can do it. Its not like any of you negative nelly's are paying her to blog. Just plain rude!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Personally, I wouldn't pay her to blog what she's been putting up, so I wouldn't pay to read she's scratching her butt. If you want to read about personal, private family problems stay and enjoy. The "rude" part is taking advertising money and putting up non-topic stuff or nothing at all, which has been the case more and more over the past year. We all have personal problems. We all have to go to work, which is what this is for her. I wonder if she stops home schooling her child when life gets too much for her? Sometimes the best thing to do is go forward, soldier on or get professional help dealing with life

  23. I had just found this site a few months back and thought yeah. But now I say Boo. what a waste of time to even come here. Thought this was about shopping tv not as my life turns.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I wonder if she's ever coming back? Maybe I should take this off my "Favorites" list?

  25. It's now a month later and this poor old tired site is still languishing. Time to take it down and move on, Home Shopping Queen.

    ReplyDelete
  26. HSQ, it's your website and do with it what you will. I like it. Sure, it takes time but don't let anyone tell you to take it down!

  27. Queen Bea,
I am so sorry what happened to your grandmother. There should be a special place in hell for those who exploit and abuse the elderly (and children and animals). I enjoy hearing about your life, in addition to the shopping info. I patiently await your return, and I am not jumping ship to the other site because of the tone of that poster. Just not for me. Hope you and your family are ok. --QC

  28. Queen Bee can do whatever she wants with her blog! It's not like you are paying for this site. Begone from this site Negative Nancys'!

QB - Please do not take this site down.

    ReplyDelete
  29. This site is so weak. I used to get mad gossip about Home Shopping hoes from this site, but it's turned to crap. I echo almost every single "mean" poster's sentiments.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I hope this blog will have nice opportunity to shop everything which is very nice to read your blog posts.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I finally got back to this site after it being down for a while. Now that I was regularly viewing it's down again. I miss the news & gossip and not to be mean, but if something like this is going to blow you off the air, maybe you shouldn't be doing it. Getting my info from homeshoppingista.com now.

  32. your content is very interesting, was enjoyable to read.do come up with some more topics and real stories like this. i am adding your blog to my favorite list.

  34. I don't believe this really happened. It's been around the internet for years! Same EXACT story!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh pleeeeze who cares about your GRAMMA only you.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I am amused by the Queen Bee cheerleaders (or is it cheerleader) telling everybody to move on if they don't like the naval gazing and drama. Oh, the drama! I think what's happened here is a real shame. As others have said, everybody has trials and tribulations and we lick our wounds and get on with life.

  46. Hi, sorry and sad for your grandma. It is surprising such heartless conmen will not stop at anything. But with a family like you I am sure she will get over it soon.

  47. High values food is attached then to create the approved solutions and the making of the food with the different taste is amazing as like the matching of the food and wine which is often cast.

  48. Sorry to hear about your grandmother.
What those scammers did to her is despicable, and I hope she reported them to the FTC and as many law enforcement branches as possible.

She can also contact both federal AND local law-enforcement, and use Veterans and army-related groups to obtain more resources. Usually, letters and complaints from army-families about non-military scammers are taken seriously by federal bodies. And since it's election season now... when pro-military lobbies pressure police bodies, you get more resources on your side.

If the local police are too tech un-savvy to do anything about this problem, go one step higher. Even if the money is gone, assets the criminals own can be liquidated.

Your grandma shouldn't give up! And... some of these commentators have Empathy-deficiencies. Scammers play on peoples' fears, and con many intelligent people. It's good that you are using your blog to get the word out!

  49. wow i like yout work and writing
