The Song that Haunts my Dreams

Close your eyes and count to eight ...

I fall asleep to this song, I wake up to this song, I catch myself singing it while I'm folding laundry or washing dishes. Is there some sort of subliminal messaging going on?

No don't, cause I can't wait ...

Since I'm completely powerless to fight it, I thought I would at least find out exactly who was slowly brainwashing me. The song, which is on super heavy rotation on QVC, is called "Honeycomb" and the artist's name is Nadia Fey. According to her website, Nadia's songs aren't just popular on the Q:
A cutting edge singer/songwriter, Nadia Fay's talents are unparalleled. Her original songs have appeared in films/trailers (Nights in Rodanthe, Marley & Me), commercials (QVC promo, Shoe Carnival, Samsung) and in several major TV shows including General Hospital, Road Rules, Smallville, Ghost Whisperer, Reaper, CSI NY, How to Look Good Naked, The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, Entertainment Tonight, etc. A dynamic performer, Nadia is currently playing live in the Los Angeles area and working on new material for her upcoming album "Spirit on Display", a deeply personal collection of her best music yet. Stay tuned! See youtube.com/nadiafay for more videos Nadia's album "Honeycomb" is available at iTunes, rhapsody.com and amazon.com
Everything's free in this field of fantasy ...

Dan Wheeler: QVC Host by Day, Rock Star by Night

Who knew that mild-mannered veteran QVC host, Dan Wheeler, had a secret life? And as a rock star no less!

Dan plays bass and even sings some lead vocals in the classic rock band, Blue Sky Band. I can only assume that the name is an homage to the Allman Brothers song of the same name.

But unlike most rock stars, Dan isn't in it for the hoards of groupies and requisite stint in drug rehab. Not only are all the guys in the band just in it for the fun, they also donate all the proceeds from their to charity.
According to the Blue Sky Band website, this is what you can expect to hear at one of their shows:
Blue Sky plays mainly classic rock and roll, especially music by the Allman Brothers and other Southern style rock. Twin guitar numbers such as Blue Sky, Jessica, and Ramblin Man are featured. Classic rock staples such as numbers by the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, and Eric Clapton are also prominent in the repertoire. More roots and jam oriented music, such as that of Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead, and blues numbers provide additional variety. Popular party staples such as numbers by Van Morrison and Jimmy Buffet get everyone up dancing!
If you're in the Philly area, you should totally check them out! Have fun, see a favorite host, support charity ... it's all good. Plus they have some sort of pirate that likes to show up sometimes. Not sure what that's about. But if The Wiggles can have a pirate, I suppose Blue Sky Band can have one too!

Here's all their links in case you ever want to check out a show:

By the way, new host and aspiring musician, Jonathan Redford will be playing a concert next week. Check it out!

Her Name was Lola ...

... she was a showgirl ...

Have I mentioned that I'm a Fanilow? Oh, yes I am! And I don't care who knows it. I came out of the Barry-Manilow-fan closet years ago, which is way more then I can say about Mr. Manilow. He seems to be rather fond of the closet.

... with yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there...

I've even seen him in concert. I'll admit it. I had a good time too. He might be cheesy, but in a totally awesome way. My mother even got to sit on stage at his concert in Las Vegas. I come from a long line of proud, yet still somewhat embarrassed, Fanilows.

... She would merengue and do the cha-cha ...

There's nothing better than cranking up "Mandy" on the car stereo and belting it at the top of your lungs and completely out of key.

... And while she tried to be a star, Tony always tended bar Across the crowded floor, they worked from 8 til 4 ...

So, I have an appointment to watch Barry on the Q tomorrow night and I can't wait. He writes the songs, you know!

... They were young and they had each other, Who could ask for more?

QVC Music Comes Out of the Closet

Recently, QVC has been ramping up their music offerings--everything from Alabama, to the Goo-Goo Dolls (who would have ever thought they would be on the Q!!!), to Clay Aiken (aren't you glad he finally came out? it was loooooooooong overdue).

Yes, I know, QVC was doing music years ago--they even tried to launch their own record label--but that was a totally different animal. It was like those late-night infomercials with Dick Clark and some Time-Life collection of Great Love Songs of the Fifties. Not exactly cutting edge!

The music industry has been changing rapidly, and mostly for the better. A handful of labels, corporate-owned radio stations, and MTV/VH1 shoved whatever slop they wanted to make down everyone’s throats for years. What choice did we have? Sure, there was a bit of an indie market (i.e. college radio), but not enough to change the musical landscape much.

Then came the ability to download music from the Internet, iPods, social networking sites like MySpace, satellite radio … and all of a sudden a whole new universe of music opens up. Like going from black-and-white TV to color, the difference is startling.

Instead of adjusting their business model, most of “the suits” railed against these changes every step of the way—suing college kids for sharing music, as if they were the ones responsible for the changing tide.

Today, musicians no longer need a traditional record deal, but what they do need is promotion in order to break through. Promotion costs money.

QVC, and other home shopping channels, find themselves in a unique position. They can provide a platform for musicians to be heard by millions of people. Not only will they sell units while on the air, they are essentially getting an hour-long commercial on basic cable.

If the Q plays their cards right, I think that they could become a major force in the music industry.

Right now, they are only selling CDs because they think that there is a void in the selling of the physical product. Maybe. But they need to be looking forward, not back. Think about the instant gratification of hearing an artist playing on QVC and then immediately downloading the album from their website.

But why would you go to the Q’s website and not iTunes or some other place? Maybe it’s a better price or you get an extra song or two or maybe they have it before anyone else does.

Because of their platform, QVC could showcase unsigned or little-known talent. They could have an hour of fresh new artists. Of course, some would catch on and do well and others would not, but that’s what would make it interesting.

Home shopping channels love to find and sell the latest and greatest from inventive entrepreneurs. They just need to apply their own model of promoting “new discoveries” to the music industry.

Let Go, Let Go, Come on In ...

Have you been diggin' the new HSN promos? Got that song stuck in your head all day? I love the new promos and love that song by Toby Lightman. I also think that it's awesome that HSN is working with an independent artist (Toby releases her albums on her own label, T Killa Records).

With the music industry changing so rapidly, artists have to think outside the box to get themselves and their music noticed. This was a great partnership and I hope HSN works with other artists in the future. The new album, Let Go, is dropping July 15th and you can catch Toby live on HSN later this month.

If you want an autographed copy of the album, Toby will be autographing the first 400 copies of Let Go and making them exclusively available through her web store for only $12.

What Toby said about the new album, "This album led me back to the roots of why I started singing and recording music in the first place. So, Let Go was recorded the very same way Little Things was recorded. Boots (the producer of the record) and I, sat in a room, and literally played everything. From the guitars to the violins to the keys... I did have my old friend, Coach, lay down an amazing groove on the drums. We put our hearts and souls into this record and i can't wait for everyone to hear it"

Today's Blue Plate Specials ... Caution! Crashing Computers!

QVC's TSV is a Click Free Automatic Backup 160GB External Hard Drive. I'm guessing today we will be regaled with many tales of computer crashing woe. If only, if only, they would have had an external hard drive all those precious family pictures wouldn't all be lost forever. Forever!

This one is supposed to be for the technically impaired *cough*queen bea*cough* and somewhat idiot proof (no comments from the peanut gallery, chickadees!) Seriously though, Mr. Queen Bea--who is much more technically savvy--wants me to let y'all know that this is a "heck of a deal!"

HSN's TS is an Esteban Celebration Fireworks 30-piece Guitar Collection. There's all sorts of controversy on the Interenet about Esteban. Is he what he claims to be or is he a made up character used to sell cheap guitars? I don't know. I do know that I don't like the fireworks design on this particular guitar and I'll leave it at that.

Check out the presale on the Vivitar 5MP Digital Video Camera with 1GB SD Card and Case and there's also free shipping on most sewing machines.

The ShopNBC OTV is an Android Men's or Women's Black Abyss Ultra-Thin Quartz Ceramic Watch. Surprise, surprise ... another watch! ShopNBC has been all over this ceramic watch trend. At about $167, this isn't too bad for a water-resistant watch with a ceramic band, mother-of-pearl face, and sapphire crystal. This watch might be good if you're hard on your watches, but still want to look all fancy (here's your red dress, Fancy don't let me down! sorry ... Queen Bea just had a Reba moment).

Randy Travis Forever and Ever, Amen!

I missed Randy Travis the other night on QVC's QSessions, but I watched some of it on his You Tube channel. I had forgotten how much I like him--It has been 8 years, chickadees, it's not just the Queen Bea being senile again!

I love that the Q is getting more and more platinum-selling artists--lends some much-needed credibility to home shopping. Not that the stigma will ever totally disappear--nor should it (what would be the fun in that!
